With all the bluster about teambuilding and the myriad of companies advertising it, you would think that teamwork was a new and revolutionary concept… hard to understand, harder to implement.
The reality is that teamwork has been around since our ancestral hunter-gatherers first pooled their talents to slay a mammoth or maintain a communal fire. Life-affecting achievements not easily accomplished by a solo hunter/gatherer.
Mystique? No mystique, no gimmicks. Teamwork requires five basic skills:
- The ability to effectively communicate;
- The ability to trust each other to accomplish objectives;
- The acceptance of individual responsibility and accountability to the group’s goals;
- Leadership; and,
- Task oriented abilities and skill proficiency.
In early cultures, becoming part of the community was a journey that started at a young age. The basic skills required then, are the same skills required now. We are actively involved in youth development training…. Just as the skills required for good communication don’t come naturally to all adults, the same holds true for youth. Through our programs we help young people along that journey.
(And for those who work with youth, we also offer training, geared specifically for school enrichment programming in conjunction with the 21st Century Community Learning Centers…)
